Synopsis
Directed by Jiří Menzel and based on the novel of the same name by Vladislav Vančura, the film offers a humorous narrative that transports us to the early years of the independent Czechoslovak Republic. During this era, newly wealthy individuals without the nobility of the old castle lords began acquiring noble estates. One day, the post-war regent Stoklasa at Kratochvíle Castle is visited by the supposed Russian Prince Alexej Megalrogov. With his gallant demeanor, he charms the entire society, bringing a touch of old-time romance to the down-to-earth reality—a romance, however, whose days are numbered. This humorous and melancholic genre picture features standout performances by Josef Abrhám, Marián Labuda, Rudolf Hrušínský, and Jaromír Hanzlík, all enhanced by Menzel's directorial finesse and the poetic cinematography of Jaromír Šofr.
